Getting Started With PinPoint

Visual PinPoint is designed to make it very easy to scan sets of images for asteroids or supernovae. The automatic asteroid detection capabilities of PinPoint are unmatched in any commercially available software, and on a par or superior to most professional surveys' capabilities. The supernova detection capability is limited somewhat by the object inventory method used, but it is still quite usable for SNe detection and has the advantage of being able to use dissimilar images. you can even use a POSS/DSS image as a reference for your own images, as you'll see!

The fastest way to get familiar with PinPoint is to use Visual PinPoint with the sample images.

There are two sets of samples, one for asteroid searching, and the other for supernova searching. They are located in subfolders under My Documents\PinPoint Sample Images. In each subfolder there is a Read Me.txt file. Open each with Notepad and follow the directions there. Once you have accomplished each of these tasks (asteroid and supernova) you will be familiar with Visual PinPoint's operation. If you have no interest in one or the other uses, of course you can omit the familiarization for that task.
