Standard Deviation Masking is a variation on the Sigma Clip method. It is an algorithm invented by Ray Gralak that tries to reject the minimum amount of data, while still aggressively removing outlier pixels. It is highly preferable to use this algorithm when the number of images is relatively small. With large numbers of images it may be preferable to use Sigma Clip instead since it requires much less processing time.
