Emission lines are produced when the atoms in a gas are excited, moving electrons to a higher orbital. When the electrons decay back to their ground state, they emit a characteristic wavelength of light. Thus a hydrogen gas cloud excited by ultraviolet light may emit hydrogren-alpha light, which is red.
