Charge traps are defects in a CCD array that locally reduce charge transfer efficiency. Since CCDs read out by transferring charge from pixel to pixel, any failure to pass on the electrons results in a localized smearing of the image. Traps may be caused by deep defects in the substrate, by process variations during manufacture, or by radiation damage.
