Dispersion is the tendency for an optical medium to separate light into its constituent colors, as in a prism. In an astronomical context, atmospheric dispersion causes a wavelength-dependent shift in the observed object position. One effect of dispersion is to cause a shift in the alignment of the color planes in an image.
